How to Draw Barbie

How to Draw Barbie
Use the step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Barbie. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Step 1: Start by drawing a circle near the top of the page. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide for the top part Barbie's head.

Step 2: Draw a line similar to the letter U under the circle as a guide for Barbie's jaw and chin. These two combined shapes make the guide for Barbie's whole head

Step 3: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the entire head, one vertical and one horizontal. The horizontal line should be close to the bottom edge of the first circle. These will be construction lines that will help you place Barbie's facial features later on.

Step 4: Draw two small shapes that kind of look like little footballs as guides for Barbie's eyes. Draw them sitting on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line.

Step 5: Right under the main circle and within the shape of the chin and jaw, draw a small shape as a guide for Barbie's mouth. The shape should be similar to the letter D on its side

Step 6: On either side of the head, draw a curved line as a guide for the ears. The ears should be tall, but they shouldn't come out too much, otherwise Barbie will end up with big ears.

Step 7: Under Barbie's head, draw two lines as guides for the neck. Curve the lines out a bit to represent the top part of her shoulders too.

Step 8: Now draw a long line on top of the head as a guide for Barbie's hair. The line should start on top of one shoulder, move up, curve over the head and end on the opposite shoulder. The end result should look like a giant letter U.

Step 9: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Barbie shape. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Step 10: Draw the shape of Barbie's eyes by using the little footballs as guides. Follow the basic path of the guides but make the outlines thicker. Add a few curved, pointy shapes at the top and bottom of the eyes for Barbie's eyelashes. The top lashes should be bigger than the bottom ones.

Step 11: Inside each eye, draw a circle for the irises. Inside each iris, in the middle, draw another circle and shade it in for the pupils. Draw a tiny circle inside each eye, off to the side, to represent glare. Above the shape of each eye, draw a curved line for Barbie's eyelids.
Step 12: Above each eye, draw a curved line for Barbie's eyebrows. The shape of the eyebrows should be thicker toward the center and thinner toward the sides of the head. They should also angle downward toward the vertical construction line.
Step 13: Barbie's nose can be a bit tricky, so it's divided into two parts. First draw the center of the nose close to the bottom edge of the main circle. This line should be similar in shape to a curved letter V. Draw a couple of tiny ovals on the sides and shade them in for the nostrils.
Step 14: Now add the sides of Barbie's nostrils by drawing short curved lines on the left and right of the shape you just drew. Draw a longer curved line on top for the bridge of Barbie's nose.
Step 15: Barbie's lips are also broken down into two steps. Use the initial D-shape as a guide as you draw them. First draw the top lip by following the basic path of the guide and making the shape thicker. The sides of the top lip should be thinner and end at a point.
Step 16: Add Barbie's bottom lip by darkening the path of the guide. Draw a similar curved line above it as the mouth opening.
Step 17: Darken the initial U-shaped line under the circle to create Barbie's chin and jaw. Don't darken the line above the horizontal construction line because that will be covered by Barbie's hair.
Step 18: Darken the lines under Barbie's head to for the neck and top part of the shoulders. Notice how the neck lines overlap the shoulder lines a bit.

Step 19: Barbie's hair can be a little tricky too, so it's also divide into two parts. Use the initial curved line over the head as a guide to draw the right side of the hair. Darken the right side of the line, but then curve it in toward the forehead and then back out to the right side of the face. It's okay if it overlaps Barbie's eyebrow and ear.
Step 20: Now draw the left side of Barbie's hair by darkening that side of the guide. Add another curved line closer to the face that overlaps the ear for the front part of the hair.

Step 21: You can darken the visible portion of the ear guides for Barbie's ears, or you can draw small circles at the bottom of the guides for earrings.
Step 22: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Barbie. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look, or continue to the step below to go for a more finished look.
Step 23: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then erase all of the pencil marks. You now have a finished inked drawing of Barbie! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Barbie drawing in its entirety.

Last Step: For a completely finished Barbie drawing, you have to color it. You can use anything you want: markers, color pencils or even crayons! Barbie is blonde, so color her hair yellow. To make the hair look a little more realistic, add different colors on top of each other. Add brown to the dark areas and light yellow to the lighter sections. If you leave a few sections with just some light color, it will give Barbie's hair some sheen. Color the eyebrows light brown. Her eyes are light blue, and her lips are pink. You can color her earrings whatever color you'd like. Her skin is peach. If you don't have peach, improvise and use yellow-orange or light brown. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Barbie.

The Everything Girls Ultimate Body Art Book features over 50 lessons that show you step-by-step how to draw cool doodle tattoos! Using tattoo markers or pens, or makeup such as eyeliner, you can create awesome temporary tattoos on yourself or your friends. Body doodles are a fun way to show the world your creative side!

This 128-page book was written and illustrated by Thaneeya McArdle. On this page I'll tell you more about my book, and show you some of the body art I created by following my own lessons... like this hand and wrist tattoo, which I created by combining several lessons!

To create the colorful temporary tattoo above, I followed my Butterfly Bracelet Lesson on page 26 to draw the design on my wrist; my Chic Flower Lesson on page 43 to create the design on the back of my hand; and my three ring lessons on pages 20-23 to create the flower, peace sign and heart rings, then I improvised the smiling sun ring on my pinky.

You can draw body doodles just about anywhere you can reach - the most common areas being hands (fingers, palms and wrists), arms, legs and ankles. Let your body be your canvas!

The images in The Everything Girls Ultimate Body Art Book are printed in shades of magenta and black as shown above, but as you can see in my real-life examples on this page, you can use any colors you can get your hands on to create colorful, whimsical body art!

In addition to the step-by-step drawing lessons, at the end of each chapter there is a "Doodle Your Own" section filled with half-started images that you can finish yourself, by doodling right in the book or copying the images onto your own paper. This section is designed to jumpstart your creativity, to help you design your own tattoos with your own personal twist!

Here's an example of one of the "Doodle Your Own" pages:

Who is this book for?

I drew a sugar skull (p.104) on the inside of my wrist and a heart bracelet (p.25) beneath it, using colorful eyeliner and tattoo gel pens.

The Everything Girls Ultimate Body Art Book is marketed towards girls between the ages of 9 - 13. Drawing temporary tattoos is a fun, creative activity for parties and sleepovers, as well as doodling solo (and surprising everyone with the results later!).

Although this book is meant for girls, it can also be fun for folks of any age or gender who are interested in easy step-by-step drawing lessons that you can customize with your own colors and patterns. This book is designed for beginners so the steps are easy to follow - no drawing skills necessary!

What can I draw with?

You can draw on your body using anything that is labelled as safe and non-toxic for the skin, such as:

· body art markers, pens, or crayons

· tattoo glitter pens and gel pens

· makeup such as eyebrow or eyeliner pencils

Tattoo pens and colorful eyeliner can be purchased on sites like Amazon, often available in inexpensive sets.

Also check the makeup aisle and arts & crafts aisle in stores like Walmart and Target. Crafts stores like Michaels and JoAnns also tend to carry kid-friendly makeup and body art supplies. Grocery stores and drugstores also carry a wide range of makeup, and all of these stores usually have more interesting (colorful!) offerings during Halloween. For the examples on this page, I used a set of colorful eyeliners and tattoo gel pens that I purchased from Amazon.

IMPORTANT: Remember not to use ordinary markers or glitter pens for body art, as many supplies contain chemicals that aren't good for your skin. There are a lot of easily obtainable body art supplies available so always choose products that are meant to be used on skin.

For cleanup, moist wipes are perfect for wiping makeup off your skin, as sometimes soap and water is not enough to get off all the color. Moist wipes can be easily purchased at grocery stores, drugstores, etc.

Doodle & Draw!

In essence, The Everything Girls Ultimate Body Art Book is a book filled with easy drawing lessons, which means you can draw the images on paper too, not just your skin! I actually suggest practicing on paper first, to get a feel for how each image is created and how it might look when finished. You can also experiment with different color combinations and patterns. Feel free to change anything you want in the lesson to make the drawing your own!

More tattoo examples
Here are a few more examples of body art tattoos that I drew on myself, following the lessons in The Everything Girls Ultimate Body Art Book!
In the example below, you can see how the butterfly bracelet wraps around my wrist:

Learn how to draw this butterfly bracelet on page 26!

The example below shows that you don't need a bunch of colors to draw doodle tattoos... you can make cool tattoos using just one color!

Learn how to draw this henna hand design in Chapter 6!

In the example below, I covered my arm in doodle tattoos from several lessons in The Everything Girls Ultimate Body Art Book.

In the top row, I followed the pattern lesson on page 17 to create a row of raindrop shapes.

Beneath that, I drew the groovy star pattern demonstrated on page 18.

Below the stars, I drew the chic pattern from the lesson on page 19.

The next design is a flower bracelet, which you can learn on page 24.

The bottom image, a giant peace sign flower, was actually drawn from my "Peace Flower Ring" lesson on page 22, but I decided to draw it large on my arm instead of as a ring. This example shows that you can draw these lessons anywhere - the rings don't have to go on fingers, the bracelets don't have to go on wrists - they can go anywhere you want!

To draw these temporary tattoos on my arm, I used a set of colorful eyeliners that I purchased from Amazon. I washed them off using moist wipes (the kind meant for skin, not household cleaning).

Cute Love

A man bought 12 flowers. 11 real and 1 fake. He said, "I will love you until the last flower dies."

There was a girl named Becca and a boy named Joe. Becca was in a burning house. None of the firefighters could get in the house because the fire was too big. Joe dressed in one of the fire suits and got into the house. When he got up the stairs, the steps fell off behind him. When he got into her room he sealed the door up behind him. He held her tight, kissed her, huged her, then said that he loved her. She asked what was wrong, and he said that he was going to die. Her eyes widened as she began to cry. He picked her up and jumped out of the four story house. He landed on his back with her on top of him. He died to save her life.

A girl and guy were speeding over 100 mph on a motorcycle.
Girl: Slow down. I'm scared.
Guy: No this is fun.
Girl: No its not. Please, it's too scary!
Guy: Then tell me you love me.
Girl: Fine, I love you. Slow down! Guy: Now give me a big hug. (Girl hugs him)
Guy: Can you take my helmet off and put it on? It's bugging me.
In the paper the next day: A motorcycle had crashed into a building because of brake failure. Two people were on the motorcycle, but only one survived. The truth was that halfway down the road, the guy realized that his brakes broke, but he didn't want to let the girl know. Instead, he had her say she loved him, felt her hug one last time, then had her wear his helmet so she would live even though it meant he would die.

Once a guy said to a girl: "Love is like a rainbow, it's colourful and makes people smile.
Love is like an ocean, it's deep and beautiful.
Love is like the sun, it shines and it's warm.
Love is like rain, it's calm and refreshing.
Will you let me show you that love?"

The girl shook her head while smiling: "No"

The guy looked down sadly and then he heard her saying these words: "I want you to show me YOUR love..."
